Asheville, NC

 

We counted 94 chimney swifts, from about 7:00pm-8pm. (They really didn't start doing much till around 7:30, and were all in the chimney by around 8.)

This was on Saturday night, September 10, 2011. Location: Asheville, NC. (West Asheville section of town.) The site is a furniture store (Luke Atkinson furniture) with a chimney. It's right beside two moderately busy streets...Brevard Rd and Haywood Rd. Weather was beautiful, felt like fall...scattered clouds and cool.  Thanks for compiling this. We had fun watching and counting!

On September 11, 2011, Helen Pugh and I observed 41 Chimney Swifts enter the Kewpee’s Sandwich Shop chimney at 520 Wisconsin Avenue, Racine, Wisconsin, between 7:15 and 7:25 PM. It was a perfect late summer evening (clear, mild, calm).

Shorewood, WI

 

425 Chimney Swifts dived into the chimney at St Robert's school in
Shorewood on Capitol and Maryland tonight 9/11/11 between 7 and 7:20
PM. They stayed high till shortly before diving in, possibly to
continuing feeding on this warm, calm, clear night with a rising full
moon, possibly partly because of the large crowd of watchers, about
30-40, including the science teacher from the school, the Urban
Ecology educator, their students, and the parents of the students.

Pittsburg, KS

 

September 11, 2011 - Three parties from the Sperry-Galligar Audubon counted Chimney Swifts at three locations in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., KS. Had a total of 1287 birds counted at three roosts. A former grade
school building had numbers estimated at 800 birds - too many to accurately count. Two other chimney roosts were at an old church and the local newspaper office building. Unfortunately, three previously
counted roost sites located at city school buildings have been capped. Weather was clear & calm in low 70's. Last birds down was about 8:10 P.M. Central DST.

Corpus Christi, TX

 

counted 7 Chimney Swifts entering the chimney at my home on Sept. 11. My address is 4437 Clear Fork Dr., Corpus Christi, TX 78410. A beautiful full moon was climbing the sky to my right as I observed the swifts entering the chimney just at sunset and about 20-25 minutes after. They always seem to come home when I think it's too dark for them to see.

About 3 swifts entered and then immediately exited the chimney, but 7 stayed the night.
